How to Meditate with Crystals 101 – Part 4

by Eric Justin of OneOriginStarseed

Meditating with Crystals and Gemstones

It is advised to become relatively comfortable with a meditation practice such as the one outlined above, prior to beginning to practice meditation using crystals and gemstones. Once one can meditate comfortably for at least a short length of time (5 minutes or so), and achieve even a minimal level of stillness of body and mind, then one can try to incorporate crystals and gemstones into their daily practice when they so desire.

The reason it is recommended to establish one’s meditation practice first, without crystals or gemstones, is to properly establish a conscious familiarity with the condition, and quality of one’s personal energy, before adding an outside variable that will alter the state of your energy.  To put it simply, one needs to be able to see clearly what the quality of their energy is both before and after adding crystals and gemstones to the equation.

Being familiar with oneself on an intimate level through meditation, it will become easier to see the effect that crystals and gemstones have on one’s body, mind and spirit. By having cultivated life sensitivity, it will become clear on the effects of the crystals, how to use them best, and in which quantity and length of time they should be used for greatest balance. One that is not sensitive to their own energies, nor the subtle state of their reality, will find it hard to know if anything is changed by adding or taking away a crystal or two during meditation and energy practices. Without this sensitivity, Crystal Alchemy can be challenging.

Meditating with Raw Crystals and Tumbled Gemstones

When one has practiced meditation for long enough that it becomes comfortable and natural, and you can see some changes and refinement of your consciousness and energy before and after the practice, then it’s time to begin experimenting with the incorporation of crystals and gemstones. At this point, you know by heart all the details of the physical form that need to be maintained during the practice, and you no longer need to think about them. Having achieved this minimal level of life sensitivity, means one will clearly be able to honestly sense alterations in your body chemistry and consciousness, with the addition of crystals and gemstones.

  • Select a small number of crystals beforehand that you wish you connect with during your meditation. Choose 1 to 3 types of crystals you instinctively feel drawn to on that day. It is good to have two of each type, so each hand can hold the same type of crystal, and there will be a symmetrical application of energy distribution on each side of the body. This will also make it easier to “read” or “listen” to the crystals.

  • Arrange them on the ground close and around you, just before you establish your seated meditation posture. Put them in an order which is instinctive to you, so you won’t have to open your eyes to look at them during the practice, but can still put them down and pick them up as you need.

  • Practice your seated meditation as prescribed above, but in each of your open palms resting above each knee, have a crystal of the same type. In advanced practice, you can change it up so the type of crystal you have in each hand is different, but in the beginning start with a single type of the same in each hand, so you can become distinctly familiar with the energy signature of that particular crystal.

  • Now you are doing your meditation as usual, but there is a crystal in each open palm. You can keep them there as long or as short as you spontaneously feel. In addition, feel free to switch up the crystals you are holding whenever you instinctively may feel you would like to.

Points to Consider:

  • Incorporating raw crystals, gemstones, and tumble stones into your mediation is done after the two breath cleansing exercises, and just before starting the main practice.

  • Try not to imagine any particular effect, but with clear awareness and stillness of mind, “feel” and “listen to” the energetic statement of the crystals, noticing any changes of energy that may occur in oneself or in one’s surroundings, as the result of coming in contact with the crystal and holding it for some time.

  • Remember that even when incorporating crystals and gemstones into one’s practice, the main function of your meditation is stillness and purity of awareness. Try not to get carried away with the presence of the crystals during your meditation, but just keep maintaining awareness of the whole experience of that present moment

  • Don’t forget that the crystals used during meditation should be energetically cleansed on a daily basis. (See our guide here) or read our book Alchemy of Starlight.

  • For the purpose of developing one’s level of skill in Crystal Alchemy, consider having a notebook in which you can scribble down notes of things you notice or learn during your crystal meditations. Take note of any qualities, effects or experiences that seem to repeat with the use of certain crystals.

  • Using forms of crystals that are as close as possible to their original natural state can add a noticeable degree of impact to their energetic signature. Sometimes this signature can be weakened, the more the stone is processed and altered.

  • Be aware that physical contact with certain raw unpolished crystals and gemstones can be toxic, so be sure to take caution if using them in their completely raw and unprocessed natural state. Most crystals should be safe and fine, but certain stones may pose a level of toxicity when exposed to water or in powder form, etc. Check out the information in our online guide on crystal properties, or do a search on the net to find out if the crystal in question has any significant level of toxicity to it that needs to be considered.

Meditating with Accessories and Jewelry Made from Crystals and Gemstones

Using accessories and jewelry made from crystals and gemstones can have some awesome advantages. The fact that they can be worn on your wrists, neck, ankles etc., means their range of use can be greatly expanded far beyond just the time spent in meditation with them. They also can usually be taken into the shower or bath with you, giving them a nice energetic cleanse, which also means less extra maintenance time spent on them each day.

The practice of using your crystal and gemstone accessories and jewelry during meditation, basically follows the same outline given above for meditating with raw crystals and tumbled gemstones. The main difference is now you will wear them on your body prior to the mediation, and may need to sometimes direct your attention to the place on the body where you are wearing them.

For purposes of seated meditation, maybe one of the best crystal and gemstone accessories to use are those in the form of a beaded bracelet or beaded necklace. These can easily be taken off, and rotated around the hand, bead by bead like prayer beads, which can give an added effect energetically, or give an extra layer of concentration for those who are having difficulties settling their energies.

Points to Keep in Mind:

  • When wearing crystals and gemstones as jewelry or as an accessory, it allows you to have your hands free during certain energy practices and forms of meditation, where you otherwise would have to hold and mind the crystals.

  • Now it becomes possible to receive their benefits for far longer each day, and in a wider range of situations. Meditation with them can also be done at any time during the day when you are able to close your eyes for a few minutes, and peel away the accumulations of the day in quiet re-integration.

  • Try to choose an accessory piece that allows the crystal to have either direct contact with the skin or close to it.

  • Remember that during your meditation, because the open palms have greater receptivity than other parts of the body, sometimes you may choose to take off and hold your accessory piece in your open palms above your knees like raw crystals and tumbled gemstones. This is optional however, and not totally necessary.

  • Because an accessory will often contain multiple types of crystals and gemstones, it means you have to consider the energetic impact of that jewelry piece as one single unit. Whereas raw crystals and tumble stones can be energetically explored more easily because each crystal type can be individually isolated, when it comes to a jewelry or accessory piece, it is more difficult to observe clearly which effect is coming from which stone, if your piece has multiple types of stones on it. For those practicing Crystal Alchemy, it may be best to meditate with individual raw crystals and gemstones at least in the beginning when trying to learn the individual impact and effect of each crystal type.
