Becoming a Conscious Being

What does it mean to live consciously? For the one who has chosen to be a responsible creator of their life path, there is one element that holds value as a treasure of the highest order. That is purity of honest attention. It may be said that true attention is the greatest gift one could give another. It is a quality that becomes rarer and rarer, as our modern world dives deeper and deeper into compulsive ways of living. People nowadays admire fast, easy gratification that requires little effort to get there. Many of us want to live our lives in ease and on autopilot. The recent rise of A.I. is direct evidence of this. The more we can streamline and automate the processes of our daily living, the more we can sit back and relax.  Or so we may think…

Think of the great things that have been achieved, and became possible only through the sincere attention of one or more individuals. In contrast, think of the many times that disaster has befallen us as the result of lack of attention or divided attention. Living one’s life on autopilot while indulging in compulsive unconscious living, is a sure path to disaster and misfortune. The modern world in many ways is a vehicle set in high-speed motion, with nobody in the driver’s seat. How do you think this scenario will pan out?

For humanity to blossom into the next stage of our evolution, it is crucial for each one of us to jump back into the driver’s seat and steer the course of our lives into a bright future. This can only happen to one who lives their life consciously, and responds as situations require, rather than reacting compulsively.

Ones true life spirit abides only where one lives consciously. For the alchemist who strives for purification of their life energies through purity of mind, conscious living and being fully present in every moment, is the key to their success.

The Map of the Mind Lives Only in the Past

A newborn baby is the original, unstained life. There is no thought process, but only purity of attention. Each moment of life, is a magical experience of living, which is the direct result of being completely present, aware and involved 100% in each and every moment. A newborn is a truly conscious life. An adult is usually a collection of thoughts, conclusions, prejudices, preferences and compulsions. What distinguishes a newborn baby from an adult, is mainly the development of the mind in a complex structure of polarities. A newborn baby lives from pure awareness, whereas an adult usually lives from movement of thoughts in their mind.

A mind which is still, reflects the purity of the present moment as it is without a filter. A mind which is living in its own thought process, is essentially living in the past, and cannot be completely present in this moment to live a fully conscious life. An adult in old age, usually is living largely on autopilot as the accumulations of their mind make it more and more difficult for their true-life spirit to touch the present moment. When this happens, usually their spirit begins unconsciously searching for a way to exit the physical. Conscious living is directly in touch with the living energy of life’s present moment. Only the present moment is real. The past is a shadow, and the future is only an idea.

What Does it Mean to Live Consciously?

Living a conscious life, is a concept that leaves a lot of room for misunderstanding. A simple way to identify moments of conscious living, is looking at an example of someone who is washing the dishes. When engaged and fully conscious of the process of washing the dishes, the chances of dropping and breaking one of them, is slim. But once the process of dishwashing becomes repetitive, the mind is tempted to start moving and indulging in its thought process, in order to create some stimulation and entertainment. When one’s attention slips away from the direct experience of the present moment and indulges in thinking, one’s conscious awareness also slips away from its direct participation in it. When physical actions start to play themselves out on autopilot with minimal or divided attention, one can be said to not be living consciously.

Compulsive living is a string of automatic reactions set up as responses to life patterns. Eating when one is not truly hungry and then maybe not even remembering eating it, is not living consciously. An outburst of anger, or other emotion, and then later regretting it, is also an example of a compulsive unconscious reaction.  Blurting out a comment that you later wish you didn’t say, shows that you were not fully conscious at that moment. Responding as needed to the present moment with the heart, requires the individual to be conscious.

It is said that what separates humans and animals, is that animals run on a string of compulsive actions that stem from their inborn instincts. Humans, however can reason and make decisions which act outside of their impulsive instincts when they so choose. So, the choice to live consciously is a mark of the evolution of consciousness, whereas living compulsively shows movement in the reverse direction back to our animal roots.
