After you have established your seated meditation posture, and have cleansed the breath with deep breathing and Nadi Shuddhi, it is time to practice meditation. The first part of your meditation practice will be simply maintaining your seated posture in stillness and relaxation with attention and patience. You will gently guide the breath and become absorbed in it with complete awareness, while slowly shifting away from the thought process. Complexity becomes simplicity, divisions become singular and attention becomes pure.
Notes to keep in mind:
After having paid attention to the breath, and maintaining the body position in stillness for a period of decent concentration, it is time to move on to the second part of the meditation called, “Sitting Doing Nothing”. In the first part, we were prepping the body for meditation, while slowly guiding ourselves towards a state of breath awareness, and stillness of mind, with gentle corrections here and there to keep the body posture in its desired form. By concentrating on maintaining a handful of these points, our mind slowly became naturally still and inactive, and our awareness increased its focus and alertness.
Once a degree of meditative concentration has been achieved, now it is time to sit still and stop all activity. One shifts from a state of doing to just BE-ing. Cease making any special effort to guide the breath, and just let it flow naturally on its own. Don’t be concerned with how deep or shallow it is, and don’t make any special effort to consciously expand and contract the abdomen and chest, in sync with the breath. Stop making a special effort to check and maintain the body posture, although ideally try to keep it as it was in stillness. All conscious effort should cease, and one should only sit in pure awareness doing nothing at all.
This is really the main practice we were guiding ourselves towards. Mind and body are still, there is a deep sense of relaxation and calm, the breath is naturally flowing deeply in and out on its own, one is unconcerned with anything except being completely absorbed in the conscious moment, in a state of dynamic attentiveness.
Sit in this state for as long or as short as you spontaneously feel. At some point you will naturally feel it’s time to come out of it, and when you do, then just go with it.
When you naturally feel the urge to come out of the meditation, do so slowly by opening your eyes and sitting in that stillness with your eyes open, staring blankly for a couple of minutes. Then rub your hands together and do some gentle exercises such as shoulder rolls and neck rolls. Uncross your legs, and stretch them out in front of you, and do a little self-massage. By this point, the mind may start generating thoughts again, and you will naturally be ready to slowly integrate back into the physical world. Marinate in the harmonious state you have just cultivated and keep with the unstained awareness.
