Continued from part 1 . . .
A sacred space is a place to think less and pay attention more. The main activity in a sacred space is quiet attention and breathing. Practices that emphasize internal stillness in such a place will gradually transform this spot over time. Activities most conducive in this regard, would be sitting meditation or forms of moving meditation such as yoga, tai chi, qigong, breathwork etc. For those who use prayer, mantras or chanting, these are also fine as long as internal awareness is maintained as thinking slows to stillness. As one’s sensitivity and intuition grow, you will know by feeling what is right and wrong for your personal space. Trust what you feel and pay attention to the energy response both within oneself and in ones Sacred Space when things are done with it. Spiritual practices and energy cultivation will flourish in this special space you have created.
The type of activities and happenings that occur in a given space over a period of time will cultivate the energy signature of that space. This is why it is important to restrict the activities done in a sacred space to only that which is conducive to spiritual development and the evolution of one’s consciousness. By being diligent in maintaining a certain level of physical and energetic purity of a space over a period of time, one will gradually transform an ordinary place into one that will nourish all who enter it as well as all that are near it.
Proper intention is of utmost importance. What does “sacred” mean to you? Infuse that sense of sacredness into that space and maintain reverence and respect for it. If your intention is pure, the right energy will follow. Logic has no place in a Sacred Space and it can only impede the free flow of energy there. Try to avoid invoking strong negative emotions there unless it is for the purpose of clearing and healing oneself. Peace, calm and stillness should be the dominant atmosphere there, and this needs to be cultivated and maintained with the proper intention. The more these qualities are maintained, the deeper they will take root in that space.
Activities that are known for purification such as the use of a singing bowl, burning of incense, smudging herbs, burning of oil lamps or candles, and the setting up of a crystal grid are excellent ways to enhance your sacred space and maintain the energetic purity of the atmosphere there. The sacredness and sanctity of a place are maintained through intention, correct conscious action, reverence and spiritual practices. Nurture this space and maintain it, and it will nurture you in return. Prep the garden properly and the flowers will grow.
A sacred space is not a place for recreation or leisure time. Avoid doing hobbies there, talking on the phone or chatting, watching TV, eating a meal, partying, fighting, long naps or most general daily activities that do not emphasize the cultivation of the spirit with stillness of mind and awareness of breath. The only activities that should take place here are those which emphasize the development and enhancement of one’s pure spirit and life energy. It is best to sit either directly on the ground or as close to it as possible when spending time in this space. Invite into this space only those who respect its sanctity and who will participate in some form of energetic or spiritual cultivation there.
Know this… Sacredness can be cultivated… Alchemy deals with energetic cultivation. The energy you maintain and nurture in a given space, will grow and deepen as that type of energy is maintained over a period of time. This is why one’s actions, attitude, activities, and state of mind, can have a profound impact on a place when certain variables are consistently reinforced. Your space will become as sacred as you make it. Treat it as such, and the energy which grows there will continue to evolve with you, and nurture both you and whomever else enters that space for as long as it is cultivated and maintained.
Crystals embody the energetic imprint of Mother Nature. They exude natural vibrations, which can have a strong effect on the area around them. Those who are life sensitive can easily attest to this. It is often a good idea to incorporate crystals into a Sacred Space as they imbibe, and make readily available a source of Earth energy that can be used to accelerate and deepen the energetic practices that are done there. In addition, many crystals such as quartz are well known for amplifying and multiplying the energies that they are exposed to. By having crystals in your sacred space, and with the proper intention and right practices, it can become a place with strong spiritual potency after a bit of cultivation.
Several crystals and gemstones are known for neutralizing and guarding against different forms of negative energy, and will help maintain the sanctity of the space, so including them would offer a layer of protection for times when one’s consciousness is deep in internal exploration. Examples include but are not limited to Black Tourmaline, Malachite, Quartz, Obsidian, Selenite, Labradorite, Jasper, Fluorite, Azurite and Turquoise. Advanced practices include the setting up of a crystal grid within one’s sacred space. This is an extensive practice of its own that needs significant detail for proper application.
Feel free to include any crystals in your Sacred Space that you intuitively feel should be there. A Selenite plate with a singing bowl along with a crystal charging station is recommended to set up here and will contribute to the enhancement of the space and in return will be enhanced from the buildup of good energy in that space. Many choose to keep all of their crystals in their sacred space and make it a crystal maintenance center.
In addition to the non-physical variables which will contribute and effect the energetic makeup of your sacred space, the actual physical arrangement of a space, also has a major impact on its potency and energy signature. The physical arrangement of your sacred space, the number of items in it, how those items are arranged, what items are selected, and the amount of exposure it has to natures elements, all need to be consciously managed and cultivated according to one’s personal feeling and by following natural principles of balance and harmony. With this understanding, one will see the importance of routinely giving a little TLC and attention to its maintenance and cultivation.
First and foremost, your sacred space should feel good to you and should contribute to your overall physical, mental and spiritual well-being. So, the biggest and most important measure to use in its cultivation is how you personally feel about its setup and physical arrangement. Trust your instinct and be conscious about how you feel when you spend time there. If something feels “off” or not right, then go with your feeling and make the necessary adjustments to balance it. For those that need an external system to help guide them in setting up and maintaining it, a good choice would be the ancient art of Feng Shui, which could help maximize the healthy flow of energy within that space.
Some general variables to pay attention to, include but are not limited to, minimizing any clutter and messiness in and around your sacred space, keeping the space clean and reasonably organized, giving it exposure to sunlight and fresh air, and having minimal electronics or sources of EMF in and around it. Once its physical arrangement has been organized and feels good to you, make sure its energetic harmony is also tended to. Following general protocol to maintain its energetic purity as well with things such as singing bowls, incense and smudging, crystal grids, or other sources of natural positive energy such as fresh flowers or sacred items, will go a long way in keeping the vibrancy and balance of your sacred space pure and alive.
Oneness means, if any part of the whole is sacred, then all of it is sacred. In reality, life itself is sacred and every aspect of it is vital for its integral wholeness. The level of energetic cleanliness between different parts of the whole varies to a considerable degree. Just as we must physically clean our surroundings to keep them suitable for living, the energetic purity of a space can be refined and cultivated to raise its vibration and make it more conducive for healing and spiritual growth. By learning to cultivate our own energy, and that of our surroundings, we learn how to have a direct hand in the evolution of our own consciousness as well as that of the world.
If one has the sensitivity to be able to feel and recognize the deep peace, stillness and tranquility that exists in certain places, then one most likely has realized this same profound state within oneself. The degree of sacredness of ones surrounding is directly related to the degree of conscious connection with one’s own internal sacred space. Self-mastery involves learning to master the laboratory of one physical existence to bring one’s internal experience and external reality into higher and higher states of being.
Life is what we make it. In the ocean of energy of our existence, learning to balance and refine that energy in our individual lives is the main purpose for many of us at this stage of our evolution. The most important Sacred Space to be realized and cultivated is the one within ourselves. Once the internal has been purified, external purification is a natural consequence. Energetic alchemy is the original interplay of natural energy that has created all in existence. We can cultivate a sacred space within ourselves, in our homes, in our community and ultimately the whole planet can exude sacred energy. In contrast we can cultivate negative energy as well, that when accumulated can mean misery and suffering for all. The choice is ours… Which will you choose?
