What is a Sacred Space?

What does the word sacred mean to you? Have you ever felt the deep peace, stillness and tranquility that exists in certain places?  Have you been touched by the breath of life in some pristine nature spot? Have you felt the peace and stillness of your spirit at a certain temple, church or mosque? How about the opposite experience? What places that you go to make you feel anxious, nervous, stressed out or even fearful? Think of the way you may feel when you go to a busy station, a tense workplace or maybe a place with a shady past or where some conflict has occurred. These places are not inherently like this, but their energy signature builds up over time based on the actions, thoughts and intentions of those who visit that place. This energy signature can have a significant impact on the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual balance of the people who go there. Knowing this, we begin to realize that our choices and actions have a cumulative effect and with selective conscious action we have the power to cultivate a place to the vibrational level of a certain type of energy.

A temple or other holy place is the first thing people may think of when they hear the word sacred. The original purpose of a temple in ancient times was not for spreading a religion or the worship of a certain god. In ancient times, people had a closer connection with nature and understood the importance of energetic purity and how to maintain and cultivate it. Those who specialized in the harmonization and amplification of energy, used their heightened awareness to find places in nature that naturally exuded a powerful vibration and could be used for healing, connecting with the spirit of nature, inner exploration, divination, conflict resolution etc.

Since nature holds the original blueprint for the energetic balance of physical life on this planet and she is constantly reharmonizing it, our personal packet of energy which makes up our life being can easily become outdated and disharmonized. When this happens, the result may manifest as disease, mental and emotional issues, loss of purpose, relationship strain, conflict or even worse.  Temples were then created as a place where we could reharmonize and re-sync our energies with nature in an easy and efficient manner.  Those who visited these places treated them as sacred, thus sacredness lived and grew there.

The original activity for those who visited a sacred space was not to pray, ask for favors, or perform rituals. In order to connect with the sacred energy of these places, all that was required was to sit on the Earth of that place, become still and quiet and open ourselves. When the mind has ceased activity and becomes quiet, conscious awareness becomes active. When we open ourselves to nature, she naturally rebalances our energies. When the energetic vibration of a certain place becomes purified and charged, we can harmonize and uplift ourselves in a much quicker timeframe than in other places.

Life is a sea of energy, and all of its individual forms and expressions are little systems of energy on their own.  Each life form is a unique expression as well as an extension of the one great energy which is life itself. Each species and individual being has a certain degree of control or mastery over the way energy accumulates and is moving in their lives. The greater the mastery over the energy of ones being, the greater the scale of evolutionary freedom one will enjoy. When one becomes aware of the reality of energy cultivation, they realize the importance of the cultivation of their own individual energy, the energy of their home, relationships, community and ultimately the world and beyond. Taking responsibility for one’s own life means to accept the brush of the creator and take steps to make the best life we can both for ourselves and all beings.

Creating a Sacred Space in Your Home

The first step of energy purification begins with oneself. Cleaning up one’s life, health and overall balance, one naturally starts to clean up and purify ones living space and environment. To be in harmony with nature means to have a certain degree of life sensitivity. The complexity of life and modern living may cause us to be rough, insensitive, impulsive, reckless etc. The fact that we may lose our balance here and there may be inevitable, but knowing how to consistently put ourselves back together and rebalance ourselves is one of the most valuable and rewarding practices we could undertake in our lives.

Creating a sacred space in one’s home is an important step in empowering ourselves and manifesting life balance. Think of this space as a recharge place or a place for healing and inner development. With some simple conscious actions and a little reverence, such a space could be set up and begin exuding a balanced vibration in a rather short time. The value and benefit of maintaining such a space in ones living environment, usually proves to be immensely valuable far more than one could ever realize. By maintaining this space over a long period of time, the purity of its vibration will deepen and evolve. At first, the benefit will touch oneself, then one’s family, one’s community, one’s neighborhood and even beyond.

Where Should I Set Up My Sacred Space?

To know the best place to set up a sacred space is first and foremost a matter of intuition. Rely on your inner feeling rather than ideas or thoughts and you will be guided in the right direction. In ancient times, those who established shrines, temples and sacred spaces did so through their intuitive sense and their connection with nature. It was obvious that certain places felt powerful, had a deep peace or were balanced in some way. In modern times, some people call these power spots. Although those with refined intuition and a quiet mind are better at this than others, all people have the innate ability to recognize the energetic signature of a place and know how it makes them and others feel.

Wait until you are in a state of relative calm and relaxed mind. Take a walk around the area and wait until you find a place which just feels right to you. Trust what you feel and go with it. Avoid dissecting what you feel by using logic. Keep the mind quiet and the answers will be there. If this is difficult for you and you don’t seem to recognize such a place with your intuition, then just choose a quiet and relatively undisturbed spot that you like. Avoid areas that have a high traffic of people, places with a large amount of electronics, places with strong odors, mold or stagnant air etc. Ideally, there should be windows that can open, sunshine that can be seen and a general positive vibe there to begin with. There are advanced ways one can select a place using systems of Feng Shui, Geomancy, etc. However, for the average person with no knowledge of these arts, just trust your overall feeling!

How do I set up my Sacred Space?

A sacred space can be as much or as little as you like. It can be decorated with natural items, objects of reverence, an incense burner, a singing bowl, crystals and gemstones, mats or cushions or whatever is needed to give that space a feeling of harmony and peace. There really is no right or wrong way in general. The key as always is balance. The general rule of thumb is simplicity, so avoid cluttering items and just listen to your intuitive nature when arranging it. Many people like to set up an altar in their Sacred Space. Here, one can arrange the various items one has chosen to bring into it, and give the space a central area of focus where general attention can be directed to while eyes are open.

In all honesty, you don’t actually need anything in particular in your Sacred Space, and if you so choose, it could have nothing at all except a place to sit. It’s a matter of choice and preference. Create a space that makes you feel good and which promotes feelings of calm, peace and harmony. You can adjust and make changes to this space over time, so don’t worry about doing the right or wrong things perfectly in the beginning. The energy of that space will evolve and grow with you as you maintain it, so there always needs to be space for changing and rebalancing it.  Remember that first and foremost, this space is about internal exploration and enhancement so external aesthetics are much less important.

For those that really need some ideas on how to setup their Sacred Space, here is a simple arrangement to loosely base your setup design on. In the center is the main space used for meditation and cultivation practice for one or more people. There could be a mat, rug, blanket or even just raw earth. If using a blanket or mat etc., make sure you use an item made with natural washable fabric, and avoid synthetic as much as possible. Around this space, to your liking, arrange the main focus point or alter, crystal charging station, crystal and gemstones, singing bowl, incense burner and whatever other items you would like to have that have spiritual significance for you. Arrange them neatly and avoid clutter or excess if possible.

A bit of study about feng shui or some Geomancy, will give you a good idea about how to avoid energy stagnation and which directions to place certain things, so you can make optimal use of the natural flow of energy in and around your Sacred Space. But most important, is to be aware of how you feel within yourself about the arrangement you have made. Ideally, the more in touch with nature your Sacred Space is, the more easily it will be for it to tap into her unlimited flow of energy. Just having an open window near it could make a world of difference. It would be wise to make good use of her as your partner and guide whenever possible.
